“Tercer Mundo”

Third World

Let me return, distant

talisman of my life. Let me dedicate myself

to the espionage of your eyes,

to the naval wars of your eyes,

to the roulette game of your eyes,

to the sedentary voyage of your eyes.

And while I return and consecrate myself

to patrolling your eyes,

let your gaze escape from my hostile vigilance.

Let it go far away, like a fugitive,

to see the third world. 

Plagues of misery incubate larvae.

Hunger plows ahead and runs aground in old ports

abandoned in the sand

and in the perils of the jungle.

There aren’t enough tombs, burial chambers, mass graves,

there isn’t sufficient room,

to bury one day’s worth of the bountiful hunt 

for children. They are stalked nightly,

as they sleep on cardboard in the streets.

It seems they’re bad for business.

May the gaze of your eyes

then return to see the world in mine,

the world hidden behind my retinas.

Kiss me if you grasp what you’ve seen.

Tercer mundo

                                     Déjame que regrese, talismán

borroso de mi vida. Déjame dedicarme

al espionaje de tus ojos,

a las guerras navales de tus ojos,

al juego de ruleta de tus ojos,

al viaje sedentario de tus ojos.

Y mientras yo regreso y me consagro

a patrullar tus ojos,

que tu mirada escape de mi hostil vigilancia,

que se vaya muy lejos, fugitiva,

a ver los mundos de tercera clase.

Las plagas de miseria incuban larvas.

Surca el hambre y se encalla en viejos puertos

abandonados en la arena

y en los peligros de la jungla.

No hay bastantes sepulcros, nichos, fosas comunes,

extensión suficiente,

para enterrar la caza abundante de niños  

de una sola jornada. Los asedian nocturnos,

durmiendo entre cartones por las calles.

Al parecer deslucen el comercio.

Que luego tu mirada con tus ojos

regresen para ver el mundo de los míos,

el mundo que se oculta detrás de mi retina.

Básame si descubres lo que has visto.
