“Por el Amor Perdio”
Written by Félix María de Samaniego. Translated from Spanish by Griffin Brown
The merciless death
With its impious arm,
Tore her
From me.
My glory
Is gone,
It just left–
Sad memories.
Gone are
The beautiful days;
What happiness
I knew.
In the meadow
Of my love,
Only
Harsh sorrow persists.
Towards the grave
My joy is gone,
And nothing good–
I can expect.
Let them curse
My misfortune
What is my path?
Just to cry.
When to the tomb:
Royals, Shepherds;
Beautiful flowers
You placed out of love.
Everyone, let’s say,
Voices wavering through tears,
“Beneath this stone
Breathes love.”
Those eyes,
Black and affable,
They already lost
The lively glow.
Mine are sorrowful,
Inconsolable.
They find pleasure in
Nothing.
